3 Books To Help Them Fall Into Reading!
by Veronica Spettmann
There's nothing like cozying up to a nice warm book with our nieces and
nephews as fall comes in. Here are three of our favorites! Feel free to
add yours in the Comments section below!
Blueberry Girl
In 2009, best-selling author Neil Gaiman had this Blueberry Girl
published for his friend, Tori Amos, who was expecting a daughter.
Illustrated by Charles Vess, this masterpiece is as much for nieces as
it is for parents and aunts. Written as a prayer in poem form, it is a
beautiful portrayal of all of the beautiful things anyone would wish for
a newborn. Whimsical in execution, yet realistic in intent, it is a
must read for every person, and a must own for every auntie.

Stone Soup
Stone Soup,
by Jon M. Muth, is a child's first lesson in reverse psychology. When
three strangers enter a village and are denied food and lodgings, they
suggest making soup from stones. The villagers are interested in the
idea and bring everything they have until finally they make a very
elaborate soup.
Not only is this a great story to encourage
acceptance and sharing, this is a great story for dinner-time, as it is
very easy to arouse a child's interest in making "stone soup." Take a
basic chicken soup recipe - the stones are the cubes of chicken bouillon
- and you'll have dinner and a story that will keep kids entertained.
Invite friends and have everyone bring an ingredient to make it a
healthy autumn party.
It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown,
by Charles M. Schulz, is a classic that follows the Halloween
adventures of everyone's favorite Peanuts characters. Charlie Brown cuts
too many holes in his ghost costume while Linus waits all night in the
pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin to arrive. Everyone should read
this, as well as see the 1966 movie adaptation of Schulz timeless tale
and characters!
