Maria Menounos is Freezing Her Eggs. Are You, Auntie?
by Veronica Spettmann
Though Maria
Menounos, actress and television correspondent, is not prepared to start
a family, she is still thinking about her fertility. At age 33,
Menounos knows she won't be fertile forever, and has chosen to freeze
her eggs as “an insurance policy” so she will still be able to conceive
when she's ready. Maria has been in a ten year relationship but is
currently focused on her rising career, "living her dreams," she's been
quoted as saying.
On Monday's Good Morning America, she and her fertility specialist
spoke to anchor, and Savvy Auntie, Robin Roberts about the risks
involved in freezing eggs, the benefits, the cost which can be upwards
of $10,000. Posts to her Twitter account show that, though she is
excited by her choice, it may be difficult to juggle treatments with her
otherwise hectic lifestyle.
For aunties who want children of their own, egg freezing is a viable
option for pregnancy later in life, although there is no guarantee.
Dr. Melanie Landay of California advises that women under the age of 35
are the best candidates for egg freezing, and that freezing ones eggs
does not hinder a woman's ability to conceive naturally should she
choose to do so.

Delaying pregnancy by egg freezing could be an advantage for career women, cancer patients, and women not yet settled with a partner. Also, freezing excess eggs after fertility treatment would have ethical advantages over freezing embryos.
