Not Your Great-Auntie's Girl Scouts!
by Veronica Spettmann
In 2012, the Girl Scouts of the USA will be celebrating its 100th
anniversary. As part of their celebration, they are introducing a new
line of badges catered to helping the modern girl scout to succeed.
The
new badge portfolio, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, will be
organized into new badge categories including Legacy, Financial
Literacy, Cookie Business, Skill-Building, and Make Your Own. The Make
Your Own badge (something scouting Aunties surely envy) allows all
levels of girl scouts to pursue any interest they like, and accompanies
the introduction of badges such as Product Designer, Digital Movie
Maker, Customer Loyalty, and the Science of Happiness.
These
badges and the new portfolio of badge categories reflect Girl Scout
organization’s desire to focus on leadership development for the modern
girl. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting has nearly sold out because of
its ability to help build critical thinking, creativity, and
entrepreneurial skills, things every Savvy Auntie strives to instill in
her nieces.
Aunties thinking they’ll have trouble being troop
leader next year because of the Girl Scout upgrades have little to worry
about: classic badges like Cook, Naturalist, and Athlete still play as
important a role in the 100th year of Girl Scouting as it did in the
first!
